Written, composed and illuminated by
Ralph STEADMAN and Richard HARVEY

Plague and the Moonflower - the first exciting release by new record company Altus Records - is a unique musical experience. It is an oratorio on the scale of Handel's Messiah, but its theme is as current and contemporary, urgent and real as today's news - the struggle for the survival of our planet in the face of apathy, pollution and greed.

Where the great works of the past were often inspired by religious fervour, concern for the future we are making for our children is the creative spur for many of today's most talented artists and composers. Plague and the Moonflower brings together music, drama and poetry in an extraordinary collage - orchestra and guitar, words and pictures, sound and visions, all merged into one richly textured multimedia event.

The recording features Oscar winner Ben Kingsley as the narrator, and Sir Ian Holm as the Plague Demon.

The virtuoso guitar part is in the hands of John Williams and the daunting violin solo that summons the Plague Demon is played by Richard Studt. Three choirs, a handpicked orchestra, soprano and boy treble, electric instruments and an Andean folk group allow Richard Harvey's music to range far and wide, complimenting the powerful words and images created by Ralph Steadman.

Plague and the Moonflower has been performed in all the major cathedrals in the UK, and a film was made of the production by the BBC, winning the Indies Award in 1995 for Best Music and Arts Programme.
